Do I need a website privacy policy in Ontario?

Yes, if you are doing business in Ontario you legally need a website privacy policy that complies with the privacy laws of Canada as well as the provinces you will be doing business in. If users will be accessing your website from overseas, or you will be serving clients located outside of Canada, you may also need to comply with privacy laws in the United States or European Union such as the California Consumer Privacy Act or General Data Protection Regulation (GDRP).

You can download a Canadian website privacy policy template or use a privacy policy generator to produce an Ontario privacy policy for your website, but in order to comply with the applicable privacy laws you will need a proper privacy policy tailored to your business and industry. As consumer data is inherently valuable, you do not want to lower your business’ potential value to an investor or purchaser by failing to have an appropriate privacy policy in place.
